Takuapa Old Town has been a prosperous city since ancient times. It is famous among Chinese, Indian, Arabic, Takola because it is a port city, center of trade, and shortcut across the Malay Peninsula from the Andaman Sea to the Gulf of Thailand. In the Rattanakosin Period, Takuapa was still of economic importance with a capability of producing tin. Finally, for economic and political reasons, Takuapa was reduced from Takuapa Province to a district and merged with Phang Nga Province until the present.
